About

On February 15, 1965, Wildlife Park founder John Moelaert proposed to the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce the idea of a zoological facility that would be a unique attraction for the region. Responding to the need for additional attractions to encourage visitors to stay longer and boost the local economy, the Chamber organized a public meeting on March 17, 1965. This meeting marked the birth of the Greater Kamloops Zoological Society, which was officially registered under the Societies Act on March 31, 1965.

The Society’s first task was to find a suitable location, and soon discussions began with Molson’s Breweries, who generously donated 106 acres of land on February 11, 1966, to be used in perpetuity as a wildlife park. Finally, on August 16, 1966, the park opened its gates, unveiling the first exhibits to the eager public. The BC Wildlife Park has continuously evolved throughout its history, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and dedicated professionals from across the province. In 1987, the park achieved national status by receiving accreditation from Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA), solidifying its place as a cherished destination in the Canadian wildlife conservation landscape.

Conservation Efforts

At the BC Wildlife Park, sustainability isn’t just a catchphrase; it lies at the core of everything they do. Their vision, mission, and philosophy all revolve around the sustainability of natural ecosystems, wildlife species, natural resources, and the environment, alongside social and economic resources. They understand that we only have one planet, and it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to protect it and be mindful stewards of the environment.

They have implemented many initiatives to demonstrate their commitment to conservation. They have switched all the light bulbs within the Discovery Centre to energy-efficient LED lights, reducing their carbon footprint. In alignment with their waste management goals, separate indoor and outdoor waste, recycling, and refundable bins have been implemented throughout the park. Upgrades have been made to their cooling systems, optimizing internal efficiency and reducing energy consumption. They have also installed three water refill stations, enabling visitors to stay hydrated without relying on single-use plastic bottles.
