The History of Nordic Skiing

You may have heard of Nordic skiing before, but many people don’t know the difference between this sport and cross-country skiing. In truth, cross-country skiing is just one form of Nordic skiing.

Alpine skis offer flat-foot bindings, whereas Nordic skiing uses a free-heel binding system. Nordic skis tend to be narrower and lighter than other skis, making them much easier to use, especially for beginners. As we mentioned, cross-country skiing is a type of Nordic skiing, but other forms include skate skiing, light touring, and telemark skiing.

Nordic skiing has been a popular pastime for over 5,000 years, first coming about with the Scandinavians. They found that using boards to travel across the snow (and, later, using poles as well) was a much faster mode of transportation than simply walking. Nordic skiing wasn’t considered a recreational activity until the 1800s, and it wouldn’t join the Olympics until the 1930s.

Trails

Speaking of trails, there are plenty of options to try out. For beginners or younger skiers, there are several trails shorter than one kilometer, which is ideal for practicing. Check out short trails like Chickadee, Heinz’s Way, Nut Hatch, or Black Bear. Of course, there are some longer trails as well if you’d like a bit of a challenge. Check out trails like Whiskey Jack, Great Grey, or Blue Grouse, each of which is almost three kilometers. The longest trail here is Holy Cow, which covers nearly seven kilometers.
